Rod Ratcliffe
8 Bells... Andrew "Rod" Ratcliffe
Rod was a special member of CT/RI District, Cedar Point - Fleet 126. He almost never missed a race in the summer series for at least the past 15 years in his boat, Second Chance. Rod was a true gentleman sailor, both on and off the water. He was always one of the first fleet members to volunteer at a regatta or help maintain the fleet boat. Most of all, he was a wonderful friend to the fleet, and to the members of Cedar Point Yacht Club. He will be dearly missed. Read more about Rod

8 Bells... Bill Sloger
Bill first joined the Lightning class in 1968 when he bought a Lightning built by Newport (I think it's been a long time since they last built a Lightning). That started his longtime membership in Fleet 391 on Lake Hartwell. Our Mom sailed with Dad 20+ years and we each also spent many years in the boat with him. He owned a number of Lightnings over the next 50 years, but found perhaps his most consistent success in an orange Lippincott called Tabasco. He owned several other Lightnings before finishing up his sailing years in a green vintage Lippincott he called Wasabi. He really was quite partial to those 11000 Lippincotts. He was also a member of Lightning fleets in Virginia and Charleston. Like many in the class, there was nothing he enjoyed more than a weekend sailing at whatever club was holding a regatta. CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA 2023 is a wrap!

The Ecuadorian team of Jonathan Martinetti, Moira Padilla, and Allison Haon bested 40 teams from 8 nations to win the Lightning World Championship in Cartagena, Colombia. Defending World Champion and Class President David Starck (USA) with crew Tom Stark and Jenna Probst placed second, and Augie Diaz (USA) with crew Kim Couranz and Laura Jeffers placed third. Conditions ranged from light and shifty in the harbor, to breezy with large swells on the Ocean course. Results are linked here: https://yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eID=15844

Earlier in the week Martinetti and same teammates won the South American Championship over 34 boats. Augie Diaz with crew Kim Couranz and Alfonso Garcia Bringas took second and Jody Stark with crew lan Jones and Debbie Probst placed third. Diaz and team also took home the title of Masters World Champions over 14 teams, with Josh Goldman and crew Jackson Benvenutti and Monica Morgan placing second, and Jody Stark and team placing third. Results are linked here: https://yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eID=16023

The Class is particularly proud of two initiatives that showed results in the championship.  First, the Class's focus on U32 competitors led to many younger teams entering the Worlds, with 6 placing in the top 14, including the new World Champion. Second, since implementing the 2 female 1 male crew format for Lightning Pan American teams, the Class has seen an uptick in women sailing the boat. Of the top 5 boats, there were 8 females to 7 male sailors, and the current World, South American and North American Championships were won by boats that were sailed in the Pan Am crew configuration.

The Class would like to thank Case Lightning Colombia, Club Nautico El Portillo, Club Naval and the Federation Colombiana de Vela for organizing the event, as well as event organizers Gustavo Tamayo and Paula Douat Corredor and their team (photo above right) for putting on an unforgettable World Championship. Of note, both organizers skippered in the event, showing the volunteer nature of the Lightning Class. The next Lightning World Championship is scheduled for Athens, Greece in the Summer of 2025.

And to all of the competitors for traveling to Cartagena - Thank You!

The Classic Boat Group is having a contest!
All are invited to participate!

One of the recurrent questions we get is for help putting up and taking down the mast.   As a few of us are "beginning" to show signs of age this is becoming a larger challenge.   So lets have a design contest!
Contest Image
The mission is to come up with a design for tool(s) to help us step and take down our masts.

Real engineers, pretend engineers, or Rube Goldberg wannabe's.   This is for fun (there will be a prize for the winner).  And we are trying to solve a real life challenge for many of us.  So scratch your heads and come up with an idea or two.

Click Here for More Info and Design Criteria  Deadline for submissions is December 15th.
