Eight Bells... Brian Nickels
On September 25th at the age of 56, Brian lost his two year battle with cancer. He was a steady presence at Nickels Boat Works and throughout the community. He was an avid Lightning sailor only stopping to sail this season when he was no longer physically able. His sailing knowledge and more critically fiberglass repair talent were unmatched throughout the Michigan Lightning District. If he didn't work on your boat, there's a good chance he has worked on another boat at your club or someone else you know. He was a friend to many and a resource to everyone. He will be incredibly missed by family, those at Lake Fenton Sailing Club, the district, and the class. Read more about Brian

Francisco Sola Medina
Eight Bells... Francisco Sola Medina
On Saturday, September 30, the Lightning Class lost a pillar of the Class. Francisco Sola Medina, competed in Lightnings from a very young age. He was Ecuador´s winning skipper for many years. He won many national championships, he was 2 times South American Champion and 5 times Runner-Up, among several other titles. He was always a source of inspiration, he was unpassable in light wind and like all sailors with natural talent he had great intuition and reading of the course. Read more about Don Paco and some very unique (and famous) quotes by him.

Eight Bells... Hale S. Walcoff
Hale Walcoff—devoted husband, father, and friend—passed on to ports unknown on Saturday, September 30. Perhaps he is on a 15-knot broad reach with the sun on his hip. A lifetime on the water made him appreciate nuance and the power of things unseen. He loved his family, his friends, his dog, his work, and God (not necessarily in that order).

Hale Walcoff
Hale left his mark in the Lightning Class, winning the 1990 NAs with Jody Lutz and Ched Proctor and the 1991 Worlds with Dave Dellenbaugh and Kip Hamblet. He touched the lives of many and inspired others to do great things. He will be missed by many from the Lightning Family.

BY-LAW AMENDMENTS - FINALIZED
The final step of the By-Law Amendments that were passed at the Annual Winter Meeting by ILCA Membership on April 15, 2023 have been reviewed and approved by World Sailing. If you have any questions regarding the revised language please contact: VP of Class Rules Darryl Waskow, VP of World Sailing David Sprague, Chief Measurer Joe Buczkowski or Class Executive Secretary Laura Jeffers.

The By-Laws with the updated language are now posted and take affect immediately.
