Legacy of Lightning Racing: Honoring Dave Peterson

Testamonial written and submitted by Sandra Peterson More:

I was born into the Lightning Class—quite literally. My parents once won a race but faced a protest for having only two people aboard when three crew members are required. Their defense? They held up their baby daughter, nestled in netting in the transom. "Baby makes three!" The protest was overruled, and that story became part of our family lore—a perfect example of how the Lightning wasn't just a boat to us, but a way of life.

Growing up with my father David Peterson, a world-class Lightning champion, meant growing up on the water. I have countless memories of his red wooden Lightning, Woody 10801—one of the last wooden Lightnings ever made. But more than the races won or the trophies earned, what I remember most is my father's generous spirit. He was always happy to share his knowledge, to teach, to encourage newer sailors, and to strengthen the Lightning community. He understood that the future of the class depended not on hoarding expertise, but on passing it forward.

Racing a Lightning taught me lessons I carry to this day: the independence to helm through difficult conditions, the teamwork required when every role matters, the responsibility of caring for a boat and crew, the science of wind and water, and a deep love of nature. Lightning sailing taught me to value relationships—that some of the most important connections in life are forged working toward a shared goal, whether that's rounding a mark or simply getting home safely in changing winds.

These aren't just sailing skills; they're life skills. They're the values my father embodied and shared freely with everyone he sailed with.

To honor his legacy and ensure that future generations can experience the character-building joy of Lightning sailing, I am establishing the David M. Peterson Lightning Boat Grant. My father believed in the future of the Lightning Class because he believed in sharing it. This grant is my way of continuing his mission—helping to place Lightnings in the hands of those who will learn from them, love them, and pass forward the same lessons of seamanship and sportsmanship that shaped my life.

The Lightning Class gave me my father's greatest lessons, some of my happiest childhood memories, and a foundation for life. I hope this grant will help ensure it does the same for others.
